First General Meeting of the Network of Asian River Basin Organizations (NARBO)
Background
In a major new initiative, NARBO was formally established on 24 February 2004 in Batu, East Java, Indonesia, with 43 members from Asian river basin organizations, government agencies, and international partners. Members elected officers, presented technical papers and agreed to an action plan. The founding sponsors are the Asian Development Bank, the ADB Institute, and the Japan Water Agency.
NARBO's main objectives are to:
- enhance the capacity in integrated water resource management
- ensure the equitable and sustainable use of water resources among various stakeholders
- enhance the capacity of river basin organizations, policy makers, and line departments in integrated water resource management
- exchange information, knowledge, and lessons learned in managing water resources and in conflict resolution
