Emerging Asian Regionalism: The Challenges of Economic Integration

Background

Asian economies are becoming increasingly vital to each other and to the world. As markets interconnect the region, governments need to work closely together to sustain economic development, grasp common opportunities, and manage shared risks and problems. Prompted by the vulnerabilities exposed by the Asian financial crisis of 1997/98, regionalism is emerging as a dynamic, flexible and outward-looking process, which is good for individual Asian economies, for the region, and for the entire world.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has recently completed a flagship study on: Emerging Asian Regionalism: A Partnership for Shared Prosperity*, highlighting what is currently at stake and laying out the ground for further discussion on how to strengthen regional cooperation. The study analyzes the nature of Asia's emerging regionalism, and the opportunities and challenges it poses. The key message of the study is that, in an increasingly globalized world, Asian regionalism entails a partnership for shared prosperity regionally and globally.

This conference aims to introduce the “Emerging Asian Regionalism” study to the Japanese audience. After a key-note speech given by ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda, followed by a presentation on the study, scholars from various institutions will discuss the extent of economic integration in Asia and the priorities for regional cooperation, including issues on trade, investment, financial integration, macroeconomic policy coordination, social issues, and institutional development.
