Why did ADB establish an institute?
ADBI was established in 1997 to respond to two needs of developing member countries:
- development management training,and
- exchange of ideas on policy issues
ADBI's objectives are to
- broaden the reach of ADB's training and capacity-building work;
- address key issues not currently covered in ADB's research programs;
- offer to member government institutions services not covered by ADB's conventional operations; and
- complement ADB's existing research, advisory, lending, and technical assistance programs.
Refer to our statute, articles II and III [PDF 193.5kb | 15 pages], for further information on ADBI's objectives.
What does ADBI do?
Our main role is to help build capacity, skills, and knowledge related to poverty reduction and other areas that support long-term growth and competitiveness in developing economies in the Asia-Pacific region.
Our work covers applied research, policy seminars designed to disseminate thinking about best practices, and a range of capacity building and training initiatives. We also have special programs.
Looking to the future, a key aim for ADBI is to become a leading center for the creation and dissemination of information and knowledge on development in the Asia-Pacific region.
Who finances ADBI?
ADBI is currently funded by the Government of Japan. The approved budget for 2007 is $14.2 million. Review our statute, Article VII for more information on funding [PDF 193.5kb | 15 pages].
