2009 Developing Asia Journalism Awards

The Asian Development Bank Institute is pleased to announce the winners of its 2009 Developing Asia Journalism Awards (DAJA). Imelda Abano from the Philippines won the 2009 Development Journalist of the Year Award, while Supriya Khandekar from India won Young Development Journalist of the Year Award. In addition, there were twelve prizes for four thematic categories. See the list of DAJA prize winners.

The winners were selected from more than 200 entries from across ADB's developing member countries by a distinguished panel of four independent judges comprising Presiding Judge Anthony Rowley (Business Times, Singapore), Hu Shuli (Caijing Magazine, People's Republic of China), Monzurul Huq (Daily Star and Prothom Alo, Bangladesh) and Yoshio Murakami (Asahi Shimbun, Japan).

Twenty-two finalists from 17 developing countries in Asia and the Pacific attended a four-day workshop program in Tokyo that was organized by the Asian Development Bank Institute in cooperation with the International Institute for Journalism of InWEnt* - Capacity Building International, Germany. The program culminated in the awards ceremony on 23 October 2009 at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan.

The DAJA program recognizes excellence in journalistic reporting by those covering development trends and issues in the region.

The Tokyo-based ADB Institute was established in 1997 to help build capacity and knowledge related to poverty reduction and other areas that support long-term growth in developing economies in the Asia and Pacific region.
